Dr. Carlen Palmer Blume graduated in 1995 with Honors and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at The University of Texas in Austin. In 1999, she graduated Cum Laude from our own dental school, The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. She has completed two residencies, the first with the US Navy, an Advanced Education in General Dentistry in San Diego, CA. Afterward, she served in the US Navy until 2006. CDR (sel) Don Blume, her husband, was a Marine Aviator at the time and was deploying quite frequently, so Dr. Blume chose to resign her commission so one parent could be with their two children. CDR (sel) Blume is now a Naval Aviator and flight instructor at NAS Corpus Christi. In 2008, the family moved to San Antonio after it was noticed that Dr. Blume had a special relationship with her pediatric patients in private practice. The reputation of UTHSCSA led her back to complete a residency in pediatric dentistry. Dr. Blume feels strongly that it is vital to be a specialist in the field to be prepared for the complex situations that arise with treating children. They aren’t just small teeth on small people and it does require special training, patience and experience to provide the most ethical treatment of children. Dr. Blume completed her board certification on her first attempt in 2011 and maintains her status as a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist.
Dr. Blume has spent the last 5 years on the Craniofacial Anomalies Team at the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, where she specializes in the pre-surgical treatment of babies affected by cleft lip and palate. She has recently stepped away from her duties on the team due to scheduling difficulties, but remains one of the few dentists in San Antonio to provide an appliance known as the Pre-surgical Naso-Alveolar Molding. Her research was published in the July 2011 edition of The Texas Dental Journal. Dr. Blume remains adjunct faculty with UTHSCSA as well.
Currently, Dr. Blume is the President of the Texas Academy of Pediatric Dentistry where she works as an advocate for the children of Texas and Texas dentists as an advisor to our policy makers in Austin and insurance companies. The Board works to maintain a relationship between pediatric dentists, our state policy-makers, and other dental specialties sharing information to guide rules and regulations, laws, and Medicaid policy. The Board also provides continuing education opportunities for both pediatric dentists and general dentists to ensure better treatment for the children of Texas. Dr. Blume was the chair or co-chair of the continuing education committee from 2010-2015 when she took over as President and had to leave that committee temporarily. Dr. Blume is passionate about education and completes more than the required hours of continuing education hours annually. Dr. Blume was also nominated, and accepted a position on the Membership Council for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry where she has served since 2013. These two roles have required that she decline some other appointments, so watch out for Dr. Blume to stay busy in organized dentistry in the years to come! Her efforts have been recognized in SA Scene Magazine and Texas Monthly as a Texas Super Dentist. NSIDE Magazine has also recognized her with an NSPIRE award.
Dr. Blume loves to spend time with her family. She and CDR (sel) Blume have two children, Clara and Briggs. They are both very active in sports and the performing arts, and Dr. Blume most enjoys going to their events. In whatever time is left over, Dr. Blume tries to maintain a healthy lifestyle through exercise and enjoys their three dogs, one of which loves to visit the office!
