Dr. Carlen Palmer Blume is a board certified pediatric dentist. She graduated in 1995 with Honors and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from The University of Texas in Austin. In 1999, she graduated Cum Laude from our own dental school, The University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio. She has completed two residencies: The first, an Advanced Education in General Dentistry in 2000 with the US Navy in San Diego, CA. Afterward, she served in the US Navy as a general dentist until 2006. CDR Blume, her husband, was a Marine Aviator at the time and was deploying frequently, so she resigned her commission to stay close to their two children, Clara and Briggs. CDR Blume is now a Reserve Naval Aviator and serves as a flight instructor at NAS Corpus Christi. In 2008, the Blume family moved to San Antonio after it was noticed that Dr. Blume had a special relationship with her pediatric patients in private practice. The stellar reputation of UTHSCSA led her back to complete a residency in pediatric dentistry at her Alma Mater. Dr. Blume feels strongly that it is vital to be a specialist in the field so she can be prepared for the complex situations that may arise when treating children. Baby teeth aren’t just small teeth on small people and it does require special training, patience, and experience to provide the most ethical treatment of children. Dr. Blume completed her board certification on her first attempt in 2011 and maintains her status as a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist.
Dr. Blume is an active participant in organized dentistry. She feels it is very important to stay connected to the dental community in an effort to stay educated about the changes that occur so frequently in guidelines for treatment, health, practice management, insurance, rules and so much more. She has become a leader not only at the state level, but also nationally. She has served on the Texas Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Board since 2010. Her duties have ranged most positions including President, Vice President, Secretary (twice), Member at Large, Continuing Education Chair and is currently the Legislative Chair. The Board works to maintain a relationship between pediatric dentists, our state policy makers, and other dental specialties sharing information to guide rules and regulations, laws, and Medicaid policy. The Board also provides continuing education opportunities for both pediatric dentists and general dentists to ensure better treatment for the children of Texas. Dr. Blume is on the membership council for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry since 2013 and is also very involved with the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. That group is particularly special to Dr. Blume because they provide the most advanced continuing education to pediatric dentists who want to not only maintain their board certification, but also have the highest level of training offered in their field. Dr. Blume is passionate about education and completes more than the required number of hours of continuing education annually.
Dr. Blume has been recognized in SA Scene Magazine and Texas Monthly as a Texas Super Dentist. NSIDE Magazine has also recognized her with an NSPIRE award. Dr. Blume’s research regarding access to care issues for families affected by cleft lip and palate was published in the Texas Dental Journal in 2011.
Dr. Blume loves to spend time with her family. Her children, Clara and Briggs, are very active in the performing arts and volleyball. Dr. Blume most enjoys attending their events. In the little time that remains, Dr. Blume tries to maintain a healthy lifestyle through exercise and enjoys their three dogs, one of which loves to visit the office!
